Chris Velez is a highly skilled trainer in both the
law
enforcement and military fields. Chris has
served as a
police officer and detective for 20
years and retired from
service in May 2010 to work his CujoCop Inc business full time
.
Having been
personally involved in the
rescue and recovery
operations at the World
Trade Center site after the 2001
attack, Chris
changed his focus to the prevention of attacks
and began specializing in Explosive Detection
Training.
His career with NYPD took on many
facets which included
assignments as a pilot (boat captain) for
the Harbor Unit as
well as instructing
classes in Weapons of Mass Destruction,
Firearms,
CPR/First Aid, Disaster Emergency Response, and
Improvised Explosive Device Awareness.
He is
presently a Corporal with the U.S. Army Reserves in
addition to
being a
Captain with the Army Division of the
New York Guard. It is under this duty where he
championed a pilot program which led to
meeting his
partner Tango (a Belgian Malinois).
Chris is an expert dog trainer/handler who
worked
closely with Tango in explosives
detection as well
as patrol work and
article searches up until
Tango's peaceful demise on July 7, 2011. Chris
has
been involved
with the training of dogs
since
1995
when he began training search
and
rescue dogs.
“CujoCop” has come to believe that
dog
training is most effective when
done in a
kind, hands-on manner. The
equipment
used during training will
vary due to many
circumstances
such as temperament, age,
strength, & response to the
training.
Chris has trained
hundreds of dogs of
varying
breeds and sizes from toy poodles
to mastiffs and malamutes and is
always
able to analyze and solve
the problem.
